Bronx native Phil Schultz enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1942 and trained in Queens. He landed at Omaha Beach and "crawled on his belly through Europe" filming combat. He was there at D-Day, at the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp, at the Nazi war crimes trials in Nuremberg, and at Potsdam where world leaders met in 1945.
After the war, Phil became a successful cinematographer for television and ran his own production company.
